  • balling gun=tool used to deliver pills or magnets to the back of an animals throat. explained 4/2/11










  • calf coat=pictured 1/22/11










  • calf hutches=outdoor enclosures where our calves live until they are big enough to come in and get weaned. Pictured 1/22/11







  • chisel plowing=video 5/23/11










  • cleaned=when a cow has her calf and has expelled the placenta










  • corn fodder stacks=we use these as bedding. Partially chopped and stacked corn plant after grain harvest. Pictured 2/20/11










  • cow=dairy animal that has delivered a calf and has produced milk










  • DA=displaced abomasum, explained 2/4/11, pictured 3/25/11










  • dairy barn=basics pictured 1/27/11










  • drinking cup=the cattle in the barn get their water through them. Pictured 3/19/11










  • dry=the time between the end of one lactation and the beginning of the next lactation when a cow isn't milking, approximately 45 days, explained 1/12/11

  • freshened=had a calf and will start making milk










  • hardware=when animals ingest a piece of metal it pokes their stomach and irritates it. In severe cases it perforates the stomach into the heart area and causes an infection or death.










  • heat=the point in the estrus cycle that is optimal for conception

  • heifer=female animal who has not previously had a calf










  • hoof trimming=pedicures for cows. Pictured and explained 2/24 & 25/2011










  • kid warmer=enclosed area with heat lamp for newborn goat kids. Pictured 1/6/11










  • lactation=the time from having a calf and starting to produce milk until they are dry










  • magnet=explained 4/2/11










  • manure spreader=pictured 2/20/11










  • paddocks=explained 5/8/11










  • pulling the calf=assisting with the birth by holding tension on the front legs with obstetrical chains while the cow pushes. This helps her make progress faster and not have to work so hard.

  • Udder Support=basically a bra for cows. Pictured 3/19/11
